The daily Hair fall number should be less than the gain for hair retention – even if it is only one less. If I were to put a number, I would say, below 40 per day. This page explains the reasons.
The correct way to assess the Hair fall is to actually count the number of daily hair fall for a week and then arrive at the average figure per day. All fall noted during the day / 24 hours, have to be added up to make the total hair fall figure
This is a simple and scientific way to assess Hair Loss and hair product
Testing a hair product
This above simple test is handy and functional to test any hair product.
There are too many Cosmetic hair products with mind boggling, enticing claims. The basic idea behind the purchase is to improve the status of the hair, be it health or style. But one should not loose the hair in the process – even if the purchase was done on impulse. This test checks the quality in a way and that is important.
Before you try a new product, know your hair fall number for the previous week. After 7 to 10 days’ use of the new product, check the hair fall number. If it has worsened alarmingly, you have to stop the use of that product. If in doubt, test again after a week. In the second test, the hair fall number should be less than the number before you tried a new product – simple, scientific assessment.
With hair fall number, you can get an idea about hair loss also. If the fall is more compared to the normal gain and the density is reducing, it is Hair Loss. Please always judge the hair fall number with density depletion if any. The comb and the Mirror are the other available advance indicators.
If one suspects hairloss, it is prudent to review the recent haircare practices and then refer to a Doctor.
Dermatology and most other Therapies do not have a simple cure or stop loss aid. If the scalp becomes visible even without a bald patch, it is a late stage for medical help in many cases. That is, there is no definitive and perfect repair mechanism. Hence it is risky to blindly rush to Cosmetic / unproven products and continue the usage casually. Therapies have limited to nil remedy to undo the damage.
If Shampoo increases the hair fall, just stop it. Shampoo is only a cleaner and it cannot repair the hair problems like hair loss. Please refer to ‘shampoo exposed’ note.
Therapy does not provide a clear cut or scientifically established dailyhair fall number in the Books.
They also do not say anything about hair shedding or hair gaining cycles becoming active once in 3 months or 6 months. The Anagen, Catogen and Talogen phases are simultaneously active throughout the year with all strands. Some amount of hair, independent of another, would be in one phase or another.
The details in the web on cycles, loss and gain in many commercial sites are perfunctory and misleading.
All Hair roots / follicles are formed by age 10. Human growth stops by age 20. So after 20 years of age, gain is not the right term to use. But then the misuse has become common – one reason why people get duped easily. Reviving a hair that has gone dormant is what is meant by gain.[I have used the term in that sense only in the swapna section. On the web, searches are becoming very very casual. No one looks for a hairloss control product with supportive proofs. The normal query is for hairloss control]
Misguidance on the net
Some experts / portals recklessly say on the web that the hair fall up to 100 per day is normal. The basis or the support for such figures are unknown.
A dangerous high number - 250 hair fall per day
Some say that even loss of 250 hair strands, after shampooing is normal. People do not use Shampoos to loose extra 150 hair strands. 250 hairs per day means over 80,000 hair strands loss in a year - nearly 80% of the hair on Scalp gone. And to say, even this much loss is normal, is absurd
Why 100? Why not 1000 if we can get that much back while having breakfast on the next day?
No one mentions anything about the normal gain of hair in a day. So please do not take any figure above 50 as functional and become careless with haircare. Making a ‘off-hand’ call on loss without knowing about 'gain', is unbalanced and can be misleading
Background facts for hair fall number
Most Indian women have / like to keep Chest length hair. You can see that on the streets. When measured from the forehead, the hair length would be over 24 inches - closer to 30 inches. Normal hair growth is 6 inches per year. So the 30 inches long hair means that normal hair life is 5 years. [measurement is always from the facial front to the end].
Hair loss and gain happen routinely. They do not follow American, English or Indian calendar dates.
If hair life is accepted5 years’, 20% of the hair will get lost in a year and we wish that they would get replaced. Got that? That is, 20000 hairs per year or about 55 per day.The hair fall per day, should preferably be below 40, if hair life is taken as 6 years for a normal Indian.
Around 1960, I used to see many college going girls and house wives with hair length upto the navel. That would be 36 inches comfortably. That used to be normal in Tamil Nad, Bombay and Kanpur around 1960.
Now the normal length is upto the chest / about 24 inches and thinning density. Many try to hide but fail.[Some points in Dermatology books have to be taken with a bit of scrutiny / rechecked. Hair was just one chapter of about 40 pages in a skin and hair manual that was over 1800 pages in 4 volumes. Secondly hair research is confined to America and some parts of Europe. Hispanic may not be included in some studies. Chinese and Indians who account for 50% of the population are just not there in any studies prior to 1998. Do we have 100,000 hair 120,000 hair? No definitive figure. So, take 100,000 hair as normal number, leaving a safety margin of 20,000
Western assumption is that the hair life is 3 years. That is why, the hair fall of 100 per day gets mentioned, without further thought. I disagree with this totally]
If this simple but boring test is used more, it provides clarity with numbers and can lead to safe hair care.
